South West Tourism Excellence Awards winners announced

As the UK prepares for a bumper year in terms of domestic tourism and staycationing, the winners of the South West Tourism Excellence Awards have been announced.

Sponsored by South West Water, the awards programme opened for entry in March 2020. In the same way that hospitality businesses have had to change and innovate during this extraordinary period, so too have the awards. Judges had to take account of the entrants’ digital presence and evidence of Covid-secure measures, alongside more traditional criteria.

In the award ceremony held via Zoom, Savouring Bath was one of the region’s winners, picking up the Active/Learning Experience of the Year and Tourism Innovation bronze awards. The recognition comes after the company picked up the same two accolades in the Bristol, Bath & Somerset Tourism Awards.

Mike James, Director of Savouring Bath, said, “We were nominated following our success at county level, and under normal circumstances we’d now have the chance to be nominated at national level at the Visit England Awards for Excellence. These have unfortunately been cancelled due to the global pandemic, so we’re making the most of our first ever wins at regional and county level in the same year. We’re looking forward to entering the awards again next year following our achievement!”

Judges described Savouring Bath as ‘passionate about their subject’ and ‘excellent advocates and promoters of Bath and other businesses in the city’.

Entrants in the Awards came from Dorset, Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Bristol, Bath, Devon and Cornwall and 25 winners were announced across a range of business types including accommodation, food and drink, attractions, events and experiences.

Robin Barker, Director of Services for Tourism Ltd which manages the Awards, said, “I feel honoured to have been involved in the awards over the past year. Of all the years, this has been the one that has generated the most challenges as well as the most emotions, and we are so gratified to have played our part in giving our outstanding businesses something to celebrate. They are all so deserving! We can’t wait to get out and visit as many of them as possible.”

Co-organiser Nell Barrington added, “I have been really humbled to hear stories from these amazing tourism and hospitality businesses about how they have overcome adversity in these terrible times.  It has been great to be able to celebrate their success today and I hope they have a fantastic season.  Congratulations to them all.”
