Lisa Wells, 32 from Somerset, took home the ‘Crowdfunder of the Year’ prize at the ninth annual JustGiving Awards, held in London on 20 November.
Shortly after her youngest daughter was born, Lisa was diagnosed with terminal bowel and liver cancer. She, along with her friends – calling themselves #LisasArmy – participated in a series of fundraising challenges to help provide financial security for her daughters and raise money for South West-based charity Dorothy House Hospice Care. Lisa set up a JustGiving page to raise awareness of her cause, and to date, they have raised £84, 857.
Keith Williams, general manager, UK & Ireland at JustGiving, said: “We are delighted and honoured to announce Lisa Wells as the JustGiving ‘Crowdfunder of the Year’, for her determination to create a secure and positive legacy for her children. And her commitment to raise awareness of the great work achieved by Dorothy House Hospice.
“The JustGiving Awards not only symbolises the hope, courage and determination of the human spirit, in the face of adversity. It also shows how technology is able to empower people to change the world by supporting the causes they care about.”
Lisa added that it was “lovely” to know that everyone had got behind her to raise the money and that being nominated for the award was “really humbling.”
