Celebrating Bath’s most inspiring women 2023

By Ben Carey on 9 March, 2023

For a second year, we’re celebrating Bath and North East Somerset’s most inspiring women to mark International Women’s Day 2023, which this year took place on Wednesday 8th March.

In print and online this feature was one of our most read in 2022, so again, through our social media channels, we asked our followers to vote for the women who inspire them, and we created a list of 20.

The women will be featured in our spring Bath magazine and we will be profiling and championing each of these fantastic women online and via our social feeds.

This feature is sponsored by Milsted Langdon accountants. Milsted Langdon decided to support this activity as they are passionate about supporting women in business and helping local communities thrive through their work with business owners, charities and not-for-profits.

Gill Freeman, Partner and Head of Charity and Not-For-Profit at Milsted Langdon, said, “The business world is full of hugely talented and successful women who not only run businesses or work in demanding roles, but they often also juggle caring responsibilities at the same time. It’s important to highlight the contribution that women make to the wider community, and to support each other whilst encouraging and empowering the younger generations.”

Today we put the spotlight on Alison Allen, Partner and Head of Private Client Sector at Stone King.

Alison Allen has been Chair at Bath-headquartered law firm Stone King since 2020.

As the legal profession continues in its efforts to bring about more equality, diversity and of course equity, Alison’s experience of attending a state school (pleasingly becoming less of an issue for those considering legal careers) has perhaps played a key part in her interest in this work. She has also had to negotiate the legal profession at a time when it was very traditionally male with some outdated attitudes, something she has helped to play a part in changing.

Alison brings this lived experience to her work as Chair of Stone King and her work in diversity, equality and inclusion has seen the firm appointing a designated Equality Officer, signing up to the Race Fairness Commitment as well as other initiatives around gender and LGBTQ+ issues.

Alison brings vast legal experience to her role as head of the Private Client sector, with her efforts for the firm’s older clients (in particular) quite extraordinary and spanning more than the legal work seemingly entails. For example, arranging care for clients when the care system is under extreme pressure and there is no one else to help them.

She joined Stone King in 1998 and celebrates a quarter of century this year, with many at the firm regarding Alison as not only a role model but as a treasured friend as well.
