Plans for Bath Christmas Market extension on hold

By Anita Jaynes on 18 May, 2017

Following a period of consultation, it has been decided that Bath Christmas Market 2017 will return for 18 days from November 23-December 10.

VisitBath originally submitted plans for approval by Bath and North East Somerset Council proposing a 25-day event, including an extended footprint and a range of visitor and community destination programmes/ events, reaching out to Walcot Street, Queen Square and Kingsmead Square.

David James, Chief Executive of VisitBath said; “It was clear from the feedback that there is a desire to make the market more family friendly, and, spread out the geography to ensure that the benefits are felt more widely across the city. Whilst we cannot deliver all of this in one go because of costs, we will be exploring opportunities to deliver a city wide event to introduce a wider range of benefits. “

David added, “A full review of the developments will be conducted in 2019, before concluding whether it is viable to run with only 18 days based on the requirement of a wider spread of footfall and more benefits.  We may need to reconsider an extension to 25 days to ensure the markets success.”

Bath’s Christmas Market is the largest shopping event in the South West and has been running for 16 years, 2017 will mark its 17th year. It attracts thousands of visitors to the city from the UK and overseas.
