Bath’s third ‘Soup Project’ to help kick-start local projects

By Nick Batten on 6 October, 2017

Following two “very successful” previous events, The Volunteer Centre, Bath & beyond, has announced that the third Bath Soup Project evening will be held in the city this October.

Originally started in Detroit in 2010, The ‘Soup Movement’ is a crowd-funding project designed to help the city “get back on its feet.” In the last five years, the project has supported the success of many not-for-profits, local businesses and community organisations.

The event works by charging a £5 entry fee (payable on the night) and then allowing five people to pitch an idea – Dragons’ Den-style – to improve their local community. Once the ideas have been pitched, everyone gets a bowl of soup to eat, plus a chance to chat and mull over the pitch they want to vote for. When the votes have been counted, the project with the most votes receives all the money raised on the night to get started.

Organiser of the event, The Volunteer Centre, Bath & beyond, claims that the project seeks to bring together people who “share a desire for a better community” with the added advantage that they also get to meet people and “share ideas and resources.”

Julie Poll, business connector for Bath & Beyond, said that the event represents a great opportunity to make “new connections” and bring the community “closer together.”

This year’s event takes place on Thursday 12 October, 6 pm – 8 pm at St Mary’s Catholic Church (Meeting Hall), Julian Road, Bath, BA1 2SF.
